Cultivating the Future: How AGRO-WELL and ARISE are revolutionising agriculture

The agricultural sector, vital for our global food supply, is facing unprecedented challenges—from hazardous working conditions to the urgent need for greater environmental sustainability. To address these critical issues, two pioneering projects, AGRO-WELL and ARISE, are leveraging cutting-edge technology to transform farming into a more efficient, safer, and attractive industry. Their interdisciplinary approaches promise a future where technology empowers both the land and the people who work it.

AGRO-WELL: Prioritising Health and Smart Integration

AGRO-WELL is tackling the inherent difficulties of agricultural work head-on. Recognising the high rates of accidents and the physical drudgery that deters younger generations, this project integrates innovative smart farming technologies to improve occupational safety and health (OSH). By developing AI-driven predictive analytics, Augmented Reality (AR) apps for remote assistance, and sensor-based “Vitality Trackers,” AGRO-WELL empowers farmers with real-time data. Crucially, the project involves farmers in the design phase to ensure that solutions like Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and smart traps address real-world needs across open fields, orchards, and livestock farms.

ARISE: Advanced Robotics for Green Automation

Complementing this vision, ARISE is developing a versatile robotic platform designed to handle complex tasks in challenging environments, such as hydroponic lettuce harvesting and solar panel maintenance. The project focuses on “human-like” interaction, utilising soft robotic manipulators and hierarchical imitation learning so that robots can learn skills directly from human demonstrators. By fostering seamless human-robot collaboration and implementing edge-AI for autonomous decision-making, ARISE aims to solve labor shortages and minimize worker exposure to hazardous conditions, directly supporting the goals of the European Green Deal.
